Women's Eating Disorders

Outcomes & Research

At Center For Discovery, we are results-driven and our goal is to provide the best, most effective eating disorder treatment in the field. We routinely watch clients make great strides during treatment and to ensure that those gains are maintained after discharge we place particular emphasis on facilitating seamless transitions between levels of care. To this end, we are partnered with the Feinstein Institute for Biomedical Research to measure outcomes by examining the process of treatment, how clients fare post-discharge, and readmission rates.

The data suggest that not only are improvements maintained, but that Center For Discovery clients actually continue to improve following their discharge. Further, we also have satisfaction surveys from over 2000 clients and families and over 90% said that they would recommend Center For Discovery.

Our legacy of success is something we are very proud of. In order to continue successfully helping clients, we also look to evaluate ourselves and our programs regularly to ensure and improve on that success in the future.

Here is what alumni have to say about our eating disorder treatment program.

On a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being highest, how would you rate your overall treatment experience at Center For Discovery?
Were the residential staff professional and good role models for you? 96% said Yes
Would you recommend Center For Discovery to another individual in need? 92% said Yes
Were you welcomed and cared for while at Center For Discovery? 98% said Yes
Were the facilities properly maintained? 97% said Yes
Would you return to Center For Discovery for treatment if appropriate? 87% said Yes

Center For Discovery's mission is to provide the best, most effective, treatment for our clients. To this end, we measure our results by examining the process of treatment, how our clients fare post-discharge, and their need for readmission.

The Process of Treatment
Since 2009, Center For Discovery has been collecting admission and discharge data on all of our adult clients with eating disorders. Recently we teamed up with North Shore LIJ and the Feinstein Institute for Biomedical Research to analyze our data. While we await full results, our preliminary analyses have revealed that our residential eating disorder treatment yields an average of 2.0 pounds of weight restoration per week for clients with active Anorexia Nervosa; reduces purging behavior by 99% in clients with active Bulimia or Anorexia Nervosa-Purge Type; and reduces co-occurring symptoms of anxiety and depression from severe to mild.

The Need for Readmission
Since Center For Discovery began treating eating disorders at our adult facilities in 2009, we have treated* over 320 clients at the residential level-of-care specifically tailored to adult needs. Of those clients, only 9.1% have readmitted to Discovery's residential eating disorder program anytime in the past 6 years. Examining readmission rates for specific time frames, 7.5% of our clients treated at an adult facility readmitted within one year of discharge, 7.2% readmitted within 6 months, 5.9% readmitted within 90 days, and 2.8% readmitted within 30 days of discharge. Such readmission rates are significantly lower than those typically found for a higher level-of-care for eating disorders, which can be as high as 62%1.
