At Center for Discovery, we have been helping women with eating disorders recover for over 17 years. Eating disorders begin as compulsive disorders and develop into coping mechanisms. At one time, the eating disorder may have helped manage overwhelming stress and feelings. Women with eating disorders use food to deal with psychological fears and emotional feelings. Manipulating food can be soothing and provide a distraction from the problems in life. Genetic predisposition, social developmental influences, dieting, illness, medical procedures, family functioning style amongst many others can contribute to the development of an eating disorder. One of these factors or a combination of them can lead to emotional and psychological chaos that can overwhelm you and extreme obsessive thoughts can begin. Many women recognize the unusual nature of their compulsions and obsessions but are too fearful to speak about them.
