Teen Substance Abuse
Issues We Treat
Center For Discovery provides residential treatment for teens and adolescents dealing with substance abuse. Our program is specialized to provide the highest quality treatment for teens and adolescents dealing with drug abuse and alcohol abuse. Every member of our team is deeply committed to the well-being and healing of our residents and their families. At Center For Discovery, we are extremely effective at addressing denial and any lack of understanding about the severity of substance abuse. All members of our treatment team meet as a group once a week, at a minimum, to discuss each resident's progress and treatment. The treatment team also communicates regularly in smaller groups to ensure everyone is updated, treatment is coordinated and any concerns can be addressed. Helping our residents understand their substance abuse, identify the substance abuse cycle, and the underlying contributing factors underlying the substance abuse is our focus.
Teen Drug Abuse
Drug abuse is a growing problem among adolescents and teens. Peer pressure is as strong as ever and many drugs are easily accessible, coming from the medicine cabinet, the grocery store, or school. Many teens are taking more risks and using a variety of substances. Center For Discovery works with teens and their families to fight drug abuse. Teens rarely hit bottom with their behavior, but it does happen in some cases. Many times, a parent is the first to hit bottom with their teen's behavior and will reach out for help.
Today, teens with drug abuse problems can be "A" students who play sports or "D" students with truancy problems. Many times, adults may mistake the serious nature of cravings and true dependence on a mind-changing drug as a "phase." Signs of drug abuse can include emotional outbursts, particularly of anger, depression, or changes in the way they dress. A shifting of friends may occur and internet relationships may begin. The consequences of losing family and good friends may seem to be unimportant and aspirations for the future may go away or change. Many times parents are left trying to figure out what happened.
Teen Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol abuse is said to be most common in people between the ages of 15 and 23 due to peer pressure, availability, and other environmental and genetic factors. Many of the more evident signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse may be hidden by adolescent complaints. For this reason, parents and loved ones may need to pay closer attention to see signs of alcohol abuse. A teen suffering from alcohol abuse may complain regularly of insomnia and general tiredness, which may be a side effect of drinking. They may also suffer from chronic anxiety and depression which should be taken seriously as it may lead to an increased risk of self-harm or in some cases even suicide.
Diagnosing alcoholism and alcohol abuse can be difficult when dealing with teens and adolescents. Teens are less likely to have cars and jobs to lose, while family may attribute bad behavior and negative consequences to teen angst.
