Outcomes & Research

Outcomes
At Center For Discovery, we are results-driven and our goal is to provide the best, most effective eating disorder treatment in the field. We routinely watch clients make great strides during treatment and to ensure that those gains are maintained after discharge we place particular emphasis on facilitating seamless transitions between levels of care. To this end, we are partnered with the Feinstein Institute for Biomedical Research to measure outcomes by examining the process of treatment, how clients fare post-discharge, and readmission rates.

The data suggest that not only are improvements maintained, but that Center For Discovery clients actually continue to improve following their discharge. Further, we also have satisfaction surveys from over 2000 clients and families and over 90% said that they would recommend Center For Discovery.

Our legacy of success is something we are very proud of. In order to continue successfully helping clients, we also look to evaluate ourselves and our programs regularly to ensure and improve on that success in the future.

Here is what alumni have to say about our eating disorder treatment program.

On a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being highest, how would you rate your overall treatment experience at Center For Discovery?

Were the residential staff professional and good role models for you? 96% said Yes

Would you recommend Center For Discovery to another individual in need? 92% said Yes

Were you welcomed and cared for while at Center For Discovery? 98% said Yes

Were the facilities properly maintained? 97% said Yes

Would you return to Center For Discovery for treatment if appropriate? 87% said Yes

Research
Center For Discovery's mission is to provide the best, most effective, treatment for our clients. To this end, we measure our results by examining the process of treatment, how our clients fare post-discharge, and their need for readmission.

The Process of Treatment
Since 2006, Center For Discovery has collected admission and discharge data on over 1300 clients. Recently we teamed up with North Shore LIJ and the Feinstein Institute for Biomedical Research to analyze our data. While we await full results, our preliminary analyses have revealed some really exciting stats: Our residential eating disorder treatment yields an average of 2.0 pounds of weight restoration per week for clients with active Anorexia Nervosa; reduces purging behavior by 99% in clients with active Bulimia or Anorexia Nervosa-Purge Type; and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression from moderate and severe (for adolescent and adult clients, respectively) to mild.

Post-Discharge Experience
Just as exciting, when we followed up with the parents of our adolescent clients 6 months to 1 after their discharge from Center For Discovery's residential eating disorder program, our alumni were not only maintaining the improvements they had made in treatment, but had actually continued to improve, with over ¾ of clients with a history of purging having ceased this behavior and approximately 90% of clients with AN having maintained their weight. Furthermore, Just over 90% of parents also reported that their child or teen was doing better or much better than before beginning treatment at Center For Discovery. While we routinely watch clients make great strides during their treatment, we could only hope that clients did not backslide after leaving the structure of treatment at Center For Discovery. However, the data suggests that not only are improvements maintained, but that Center For Discovery clients actually continue to get better following their discharge. In fact, 84.4% of parents reported their child was doing better or much better since discharging from Center For Discovery.

The Need for Readmission
Center For Discovery began treating people with eating disorders in 1999. Since then we have treated almost 1800 clients at the residential level-of-care. Of those clients, only 14.6% have ever needed to readmit to Discovery's residential eating disorder program anytime in the past 15 years. Examining readmission rates for specific time frames, only 11.7% of our clients needed to readmit within one year of discharge, 9.0% needed to readmit within 6 months, and 2.8% needed to readmit within 30 days of discharge. These low readmission rates make us extremely proud, especially as they are so much lower than those typically found for a higher level-of-care for eating disorders, which can be as high as 45.0% to 77.5%.1,2
