Teen & Child Eating Disorders
Levels of Care
Center For Discovery provides both partial hospitalization and residential treatment for teens and children with eating disorders. Eating disorder treatment involves many different physical, nutritional and mental challenges, which may require different levels of care. Below are the different levels of care, from lowest level of care to highest, for eating disorder treatment along with a short description.
Outpatient (lowest level of care)
Outpatient treatment is provided by a team of eating disorder specialists including a primary care physician, dietitian, therapist, family therapist, psychiatrist and any other professionals necessary to help meet your treatment goals.
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
IOP includes 20 hours of treatment per week in individual therapy, group therapy and family therapy. Psychiatric and nutritional consultations are also included. Intensive Outpatient care is often used to step down from residential treatment or partial hospitalization. This level of care is generally indicated when the person is medically stable and a lower level of care has failed.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP) / Day Program
Partial Hospitalization includes 8 hours of therapy per day, five days per week. Treatment includes individual therapy sessions, group therapy sessions and family therapy sessions as well as psychiatric, medical and nutritional consultations. PHP is generally indicated when they are unable to control compulsive eating disorder behavior without supervision, and they are medically stable.
Residential treatment includes treatment 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Residential treatment is a longer term program than hospital stabilization. Residential treatment is generally indicated when they are medically stable and a lower level of care failed, or as a step down program from hospital stabilization.
Hospitalization/Inpatient (highest level of care)
Inpatient care is usually a short term solution used for crisis stabilization. Inpatient care is generally indicated when the person is not medically stable.
