Teen & Child Eating Disorders
At Center for Discovery, we have been treating children and teens with eating disorders for over 18 years. We understand that eating disorders are very complex and require specialized treatment. At Center for Discovery, we hold the fundamental perspective that eating disorders have their origins in a multitude of factors, are compulsive by nature, and that recovery is possible. Our mission is to provide treatment that is personalized, intensive and effective. At Center for Discovery, we understand that while the symptoms of eating disorders can appear similar, the contributing factors are unique to each individual. We feel that knowing and understanding this difference is critical in providing treatment for children and teens with eating disorders.
Eating disorders begin as compulsive disorders and develop into coping mechanisms. At one time, the eating disorder may have helped manage overwhelming stress and feelings. People with eating disorders use food to deal with psychological fears and emotional feelings. Manipulating food can be soothing and provide a distraction from life's problems. Genetic predisposition, social developmental influences, dieting, illness, medical procedures, family functioning style and many other factors can contribute to the development of an eating disorder. One of these factors or a combination thereof may lead to emotional and psychological discomfort which can be overwhelming and obsessive thoughts may begin. Many recognize the unusual nature of the compulsions and obsessions but may be too afraid to speak about them.
We understand that making the decision to seek treatment for an eating disorder can be a difficult one. Getting help is an important step in the recovery process.
