Treating Eating Disorders in a Residential Environment

Eating disorders are highly complex disorders that require a variety of resources and settings for treatment. When an adolescent finds they are unable to overcome their eating disorder in a lower level of care, residential treatment provides a safe and secure place to explore underlining issues under 24-hour supervision. Adolescents have suggested that the residential setting provides them a comfortable environment to process and work through the difficult problems that are contributing to their eating disorders.

Center for Discovery's Eating Disorder Program is the first comprehensive residential treatment program in California dedicated solely to the treatment of adolescent eating disorders. The program was established over 11 years ago by Craig Brown, PhD and Jerry Carminio. Having treated adolescents for a variety of other psychological issues in hospital settings, they realized treatment was limited in California. They wanted to establish a place where families could send their adolescents and be an integral part of their recovery process. The goal at Discovery is to provide an intensive therapeutic experience aimed at profoundly and creatively facilitating behavioral and emotional growth for adolescents and their families. In addition, Discovery combines the finest traditional inpatient approaches with creative, innovative and individualized interventions that position its therapeutic experience at the forefront of adolescent treatment.

A distinctive treatment component of Center for Discovery is the familiar home-like setting within residential neighborhoods which makes the transition to residential treatment at Discovery feel safe and secure. The comfortable nature of each CA and WA state licensed and JCAHO accredited home provides a supportive atmosphere which encourages residents to address the most difficult of problems. Each potential resident is assessed by our highly skilled staff and the most suitable setting is chosen for their treatment.
