Discovery's treatment program is designed around a progressive system of five phases. Our five phases of personal growth highlight the developmental nature of eating disorders and the developmental process of recovery. Each phase is designed to reflect an adolescent's progress which allows Discovery staff to increase one's recovery independence as personal responsibility is accepted. Each resident begins treatment in the assessment phase which provides the highest professional support. This is the period of time that residents will identify their treatment goals while orienting to the program.
The Discovery Phase System is a crucial element of our program philosophy. We recognize that each resident enters Discovery with unique physical, emotional, psychological and relationship problems. Since many residents are practiced at gaining acceptance through performance, Discovery places a high value on the person instead of the performance. We see residents who eagerly integrate the skills taught at Discovery, as more likely to remain in the process of recovery.
As residents' exhibit personal responsibility around physical health, recovery motivation, along with improved nutrition habits, social skills and self regulation, they advance through Discovery's five phase treatment approach. Before, during and after each of the progressive phases, the adolescent will experience natural and logical results of their investment. Discovery's staff watches and listens for each resident's genuine desire to become healthy. The resident is able to move through the phases gaining more independence and autonomy when the adolescent's work is sincere, and therefore the motivation for recovery is greater.
